GSK Breakfast Symposium - The future is now: Igniting the dialogue and prioritising the critical importance of adult immunisations

Date: Wednesday 11 June 2025

Start time: Register and breakfast provided from 7.15am. Symposium begins at 7.30am

End time: 8:45am

Venue & location: Riverbank rooms 7 & 8, Adelaide Convention Centre

Event blurb:

The symposium will feature an active panel discussion on the findings from the new report, 'Prevention: A Productivity Superpower'1, which demonstrates that increasing investment in adult vaccination has the potential to deliver $1.1 billion in benefits every year.

GSK commissioned Evaluate Consulting to assess the cost-effectiveness of vaccines recommended for adults in the Australian Immunisation Handbook but not fully funded on the NIP. The analysis shows a $3.50 economic return for every dollar invested in adult vaccination.

This is achieved through reduced demands on health services, increased workplace productivity, and improved quality of life for individuals. As the population ages, vaccinations become crucial for maintaining a healthy, productive workforce.

The panel includes Professor Terry Nolan AO, clinical epidemiologist/paediatrician, Saul Eslake, independent economist, Monika Boogs, patient advocate (Pain Australia) and Dr Sarah Chu, GP, offering diverse insights. The attendees will be urged to collaborate in raising awareness and prioritising adult vaccination.

CSL Seqirus Satellite Symposium – Exploring the past, present and future of flu protection for older adults

Date: Thursday 12 June

Start time: 7:45am (7:30am registration/ breakfast available)

End time: 8:45am

Venue & location: City Room 1 & 2, Adelaide Convention Centre

Pax: 50 pax

Event blurb:

The burden of influenza among older adults continues to be a major public health concern, with high rates of hospitalisations and mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on viral circulation in 2020 and 2021, but influenza cases have since rebounded, with recent seasons starting earlier and with greater magnitude.  Vaccine uptake among older adults has also seen fluctuations, with recent years showing a decline in vaccination rates despite the continued availability of enhanced vaccines for this cohort.

Sentiment towards vaccination among older adults is mixed; while there is strong support for influenza vaccination, general transference of post-pandemic fatigue and misinformation represent a risk to influenza vaccination coverage rates, which have long been the highest of all adult vaccination. The role of healthcare professionals in providing education and advocating for influenza vaccination remains critical to improve patient outcomes.

The panel includes Prof. Adrian Esterman as Chair, with Prof. Paul van Buynder, Dr. Leanne Jones and Dr. Shevaun Drislane as speakers.

This session aims to highlight past and present successes and explore how recent lessons can be applied to ensure the future of the influenza National Immunisation Program for older adults.

The objectives of this session are two-fold;

  • To reflect on the successes achieved through Australia’s influenza national immunisation program, with a specific focus on the >65 program

  • To discuss the current and ongoing challenges of achieving high vaccination coverage in the post-pandemic era

Target audience: Stakeholders involved in influenza prevention and vaccination in Australia (e.g. Healthcare Professionals, Government and Public Health Officials, and Researchers).
